The answer is,......£2 in a taxi, the poolstock lane route is cheaper by £2

So figure that,, the council set the taxi rates and the Council wanted the new road,

mind blowing innit

Tommy, You're missing the point, everyone and his Dog knows its a shorter and quicker route Down Poolstock Lane, The restrictions that the council made are clearly not working and the cost of a taxi ride proves that,

So Tom

Why did they build Warrington Road from the end of Poolstock Lane to Newtown ?

If you look on very old maps, the southern route into Wigan is along Poolstock Lane, Warrington Road does not exist, and that is why Poolstock Lane curves around on it's journey into Wigan, because in the olden days, road builders had to follow the contours of the land, hence a winding and twisting Poolstock Lane, by the time they built Warrington Road, they levelled the land using Irish earth moving equipment, hence they could build it in a straight line.

You have to be a ' full blown' council executive to make up a road that costs Zillions of tax payers money that only boy racers use for fun and the cool headed ,everyday using ,economy thinking, motorist swerves away from. No matter what the council do to encourage use of the white elephant and, no matter what they do to discourage the level headed drivers from taking the short journey, The plain fact is, ' The short route will always be a winner and not just by Traffic, the laws of nature will chose the short cut, Rats, Water. electric , a falling object because science dictates that, All manner of things take the shortest route yet, The council are like King Neptune, They think they can stop nature,

I hate to think what the country would look like if its road network was governed by how much it costs to travel along it by taxi!!

I hate to think what it would cost to build as well!!

“We can build this road for £10 million but if you want it to be cheaper in a taxi by £2 it will cost £15 million to build”

Can’t you think of something more realistic to have a grumble about Tom or are you finally reaching the bottom of the barrel?

Road should have gone to the roundabout at the m6 junction

Roylew,

Yes, that is what I would have expected: M6 link to Westwood.

Was it never on their 'under consideration' agenda?

The Lancashire County Council’s 1949 roads plan was for link from the M6/M58 junction to the M61 at Westhoughton. Unfortunately it was scrapped with the introduction of the 1974 Local Government Act when responsibility for roads in our area moved to Manchester from Preston.

I heard it was scrapped because someone worked out it would cost 3d more in a taxi rather than going oop thru Whelly and past t’finger post!

Yes, I think we previously had a thread discussing such.

Had there not also, at some point, been an intention to extend the junction 25 M6 link road further eastwards?

I do wonder if we will look back to a wasted opportunity: not to have secured such provision at a time when much of it would have been built upon derelict land.

I know there is concern about the flashes, but a comprehensive plan surely could have secured the desirable outcomes for both.

I think all this depends on what the Labour Party are planning for when they get into government, because it is being said that Tony Blair is pulling the strings behind the scenes in deciding Labour Party policy, now when he came to power in 1997 he stopped all road building and social house building, the Labour Party in Wales have cancelled all road building, and introduced a blanket 20mph in areas which previously had 30mph zones, so the omens are not looking good for when Kier Starmer becomes Prime Minister
